Thinking outside the box

A metaphor that means to think differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective.

But wow, what a phrase, which highlights creative thinking and puts a mark on daily events that affect us and require us to make different decisions. Whether they are on business or pleasure, things never go the way we expect and we regularly have to readjust and make alternative arrangements.

At the Rayross Print Factory, we constantly have to think outside the box in the way we organize our printing, print schedules, printing materials and the design aspect. No job is the same and each requires its own level of expertise. Printed invitations for weddings, birthdays and other special occasions are typical of us having to think of new ways and new ideas. Just taking paper and board as examples, there are so many different colours, finishes, and thicknesses, which stretch our normal thinking processes.

Thinking outside the box is exhausting but can be extremely rewarding. Try the nine-dot puzzle and see how you can teach your mind to think differently. Join all the dots with four straight lines, without lifting the pen and without tracing the same line more than once.

So the big question you are asking is ‘how do I think outside the box?’

There are several steps that you must take to achieve this:

1) Have a pen and pad in hand or use a computer and open a blank page on word or similar.

2) Research the topic. What ever the situation or subject others will have had some experience. Research what others did in the topic.

3) Look for random inspiration that seems entirely unrelated to the problem. Often when you look at other topics and see what has been done with these that you develop a feeling of what could be done with your predicament.

4) Step out of your comfort zone. Look at pictures, products and words. Look at a site, shop or store that has lots and lots of little products. Like a greeting card display with numerous illustrations. All these images could trigger a new thought in your mind which could be the answer to your problem.

5) Aim for quantity. List lots of random words and pictures to get the best spectrum of ideas.

6) Have brain storming session to cover all areas of ideas.
